Ohio Minimum Wage Law

The minimum wage rate in Ohio for 2012 is $7.70 per hour ($7.40 per hour for 2011).

The minimum wage rate is $7.25 per hour for employees of employers having gross annual receipts of $283,000 or less for 2012 ($271,000 or less for 2011) and for youth under the age of 16.

Not covered by the act are:

  • employees of the United States,
  • babysitters and live-in companions,
  • people who deliver newspapers to the consumer,
  • outside salespersons,
  • executive, administrative and professional employees,
  • certain agricultural employees,
  • employees of charitable hospitals,
  • police and fire fighters,
  • students working part-time or on a seasonal basis for a political subdivision, and
  • children's nonprofit camp and recreational employees.

An exception also applies to certain employers with state licenses that authorize the payment of a lower wage rate to individuals with mental or physical disabilities that may adversely affect their opportunity for employment.
