In accordance with the federal minimum wage rate, the South Dakota minimum wage is $7.25 per hour effective July 24, 2009; $6.55 per hour effective July 24, 2008 and before July 24, 2009; and $5.85 per hour effective July 24, 2007 and before July 24, 2008.

All employees, including common carriers, are covered by South Dakota's minimum wage law with the exception of persons under age 20 who are paid an opportunity wage, babysitters, and outside salespersons.
