Initial Fees and Licensing Costs in D.C.

If you're going to operate your business in the District of Columbia you may incur some initial start up costs and annual fees depending on the type of business you run and your business form (corporation, sole proprietorship, partnership or limited liability company (LLC)). The following list of fees are what you can expect to pay in the District of Columbia:

Type of Document to Be Filed Fee
domestic corporation filing fee and initial tax The filing fee is $150. There is also an initial license fee, which is a minimum of $35 and covers up to $100,000 worth of authorized stock. The minimum total fee for business and professional corporations is $185.
foreign corporation: certificate of authority $200
limited liability company: articles of organization $150 due at the time the LLC is created
foreign limited liability company: application for registration $200
partnership: statement of partnership authority $150

The District of Columbia also requires that you obtain a business license and pay a licensing fee based on the nature of your business. For this reason, we recommend that you check with the District to make sure you are complying with the licensing requirements, if there are any, for your particular business.
